THE International Rugby Board last night reacted strongly to criticism of its World Cup ticketing policy by declaring this year’s tournament the "most successful ever".
Fans and former players have questioned the high price of tickets and the decision to play games in Wales and Scotland instead of in host nation France.
The most expensive tickets for Wales' games against Japan and Australia were £164 and £101 respectively, while top-end seats in Marseille, the venue of Wales’ likely quarter-final clash with South Africa, will cost £193.
Meanwhile, the Millennium Stadium was less than half full for the visit of Japan last week, and only 34,000 people watched Scotland play Romania at Murrayfield.
But IRB spokesman Greg Thomas said the IRB and Rugby World Cup 2007’s ticketing strategy had been "hugely successful" and claimed that most of the criticism was coming from Wales.
