France Rugby Union

France Six Nations Rugby Guide

The French are renowned for their flowing Rugby and when they let the ball go to their backs there is no better site in the game of Rugby Union. The French were not a permanent fixture in the five/six nations until after the first World War but they have a top success rate of 22% and that is almost as good as England and just a bit better than Wales.

Rugby was first started in 1872 when a group of students introduced the game to the Parisians and it took them 34 years to play their Test match against New Zealand in Paris. France played on and off in the Home Nations until they joined them to form a Five Nations tournament in 1910 but it was after 1947 that saw them take their place in the line up to this day.

France began to become a major force in the 1950s and 1960s and in 1954 they won their first Five Nations title along with England and Wales.

France has been threatening to win a Rugby World Cup having been beaten in the final in 1987 and 1999. French rugby legends Philippe Sella and Serge Blanco names that will go down in the archives of French Rugby football.

France plays their rugby at the Stade de France which was built for the Football World Cup in 1998 and hosted the Rugby World Cup in 2007 in France.
